undiagnosed co-occurring disorders are one of the
main reasons
that relapse is so common.

What does dual diagnosis and co-occurring disorders mean? Dual diagnosis means that there are other disorders that may exist along with addiction. In many cases, there are hidden or underlying afflictions that can cause or worsen the symptoms of addiction. These afflictions are often called co-occurring disorders. Examples of co-occurring disorders may include depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, among others.

When co-occurring disorders are not properly addressed during the addiction treatment process, there is a much higher likelihood of relapse. In fact, undiagnosed co-occurring disorders may make it nearly impossible for an individual to achieve recovery until the co-occurring issues are resolved.

When properly diagnosed and addressed, co-occurring disorders are no need for concern. However, many individuals who have attempted treatment multiple times find that underlying co-occurring disorders are the primary reason for relapse back to drugs or alcohol.

Every individual who calls on us for help will have access to screening and treatment resources for co-occurring disorders during the addiction treatment process.
